Are crooked teeth unhealthy?
Crooked (or crowded) teeth can lead to accumulation of plaque and tartar due to difficulty for the toothbrush to reach crowded sites. This can lead to gum disease, wobbliness of teeth, recession of gum, or tooth loss in the worst case scenario, if left untreated. Invisalign® allows you to remove the aligners when you are cleaning your teeth, giving you access to all those tricky areas in the mouth which would otherwise be covered by braces.
Does Invisalign® help to stop tooth-wear?
Crooked front teeth and deep-bites do become worn down a lot quicker than teeth which are aligned and in a more stable position within your bite. Worn down teeth may lead to sensitivity or jaw pain. Pre-programmed into the aligner mechanics, Invisalign® will open up a deep bite as part of the treatment, and by their very nature will protect vulnerable teeth from chipping at the front.
Are braces or Invisalign® cheaper?
Braces are usually the same price as Invisalign® for Full orthodontic treatment. For short term orthodontics either option can be reduced in cost. Your Eyes & Smiles Southgate N11 dentist will discuss both options with you.
Is Invisalign® quicker than normal braces?
Sometimes using aligner treatment such as Invisalign® can achieve the same result as traditional braces in less time. Treatment time for aligner therapy is directly proportional to the wear-time: you must wear your Invisalign® aligners for 22 hours per day for it to be working effectively.
What if my teeth do not move with the Invisalign® aligners?
The pre-treatment planning gives a good indication of which teeth will move well. If your teeth require complex movements we can let you know this before treatment begins. Due to their nature the aligners must be worn a minimum of 22 hours a day for results to be successful. If you wear the aligners for only a fraction of time then treatment will not work.
Why do some teeth move quicker than others with Invisalign®?
Reasons that some teeth do not move as quickly as others could be that they are small teeth (less grip for the aligners), or the specific movements of certain teeth are expected to be a challenge (extruding). Again, these are all part of your comprehensive pre-treatment planning consultations with your dentist here at Eyes & Smiles in London N11.
What if my teeth do not move within 21 aligners?
The best thing with Invisalign Full® at Eyes & Smiles Finchley is that there is no limit to the number of aligners you can use for your treatment within a 5 year period. This means potentially more complex treatments can still be accomplished with Invisalign®. It also means if aligners wear down and teeth do not track (eg. patient's who grind), we can simply order a fresh one and carry on. With other systems you may need to pay extra per additional aligner.
If I smoke or snack a lot is Invisalign® a good idea?
No. No orthodontic treatment is a good idea if you are smoking or snacking a lot. Generally smokers will have poorer treatment outcome, and the aligners will stain. Snacking frequently means you are more likely to trap sugar-acid in the aligners and this will damage your teeth (erosion).
What if I grind my teeth?
Invisalign® will still work and will benefit you by protecting your teeth from damage during night time, which is when most tooth-grinding occurs.
Can I get Invisalign® on NHS?
Invisalign® is not an NHS treatment option.
Can I straighten your own teeth?

Can I straighten my teeth without braces?

Do teeth move as you age?
Teeth tend to naturally collapse inwards towards the centre-line as you get older, making them more prone to crowding. This process happens regardless of wisdom teeth being present or not. Teeth can also erupt out of line if there are opposing missing teeth as we get older.
